EMBODIED - ON_OFF_SPACE DeSingel

From 20 October to 2 November 2025, Embodied took place during a residency at DeSingel in their on_off_space. The project started with a question: what happens if we give dancers more autonomy in telling their story?

Usually, dance is the last layer of a creative process, largely determined by the artistic layers that came before like music, direction, or spoken word. With Embodied, we reversed that. We wanted to see what kind of result emerges when the dancer acts as the conductor of the entire process. In other words having full ownership over their movement and a direct say in every other artistic layer of the film.

Research & Process

We started the residency with a conscious decision to think first and move second. In many creative environments, it is easy to act before you think, but we wanted to build a solid narrative foundation before any choreography began. The dancers were divided into groups and tasked with sketching out a framework by asking what they wanted to tell, what the essence of the story was, and which emotions were most important.

To keep the dancers as the "conductors" of the process, we gave them full ownership over the music. Our producer, Cléry Khedhir, was present throughout to adapt the score to each group's specific narrative. Instead of the dancers fitting into a premade track, the music changed according to their needs. We also used storyboards and camera workshops to help the groups think in shots and framing, making sure their body language would translate properly to film.

Our research found that the torytelling within dance lies mostly in the implicit, the act of suggesting a story rather than explaining it clearly. We noticed that being too literal or explicit through movement often felt forced, whereas the body is most effective when it suggests rather than dictates. Because dance works without words, it doesn't imply a single narrative; instead, it raises questions and allows the audience to create their own meaning based on their own experiences.

Documentary

For Embodied, we created a documentary to capture the process and our findings, simultaneously giving us the opportunity to reflect on how we could approach the project differently in a future iteration.

Overall, I’m really satisfied with what we were able to achieve in the time frame of 2 weeks. We've built something that feels both complete and open-ended in the sense that there is still a lot of space for growth.

I hope this is only the beginning of Embodied. We already have many ideas on how to explore storytelling through dance in new ways, especially by rethinking the workflow, creating more space for the artist, and allowing their voice to come through in a more direct and uncompromised way. An approach that aims to diminish the constraints other artistic layers might impose.
